        GOP National Convention
        August 30 - September 2, 2004 -- New York City

      October 15, 2004

Someone recently asked me to write about the most memorable event at the recent GOP National Convention in New York City. There was no doubt about this one. The daily diary pages which I constructed each day during the convention tell the story via photos of the major events of each day; however, this event was not mentioned there.

It was Thursday night, September 2, 2004. Most of us were very tired and ready to hit the road back to Georgia after a very busy week. . We sat in our assigned seats impatiently waiting for the main event of the week -- the acceptance speech by President George W. Bush.

To be very honest, I was in a somewhat negative and impatient mood since I had grown weary of people constantly climbing over me -- especially the overweight women with generously endowed posteriors. In fact I was in a very irreverent mood complete with the usual grumblings.

Governor Patacki introduced the President and the crowd began to roar and gave one of many standing ovations. In the midst of the noise suddenly there came over me the most serene and peaceful feeling that is impossible to describe. If one is in a prayerful mood, this reaction might be expected. However, I had not been in a prayerful mood! The feeling of serenity and total peace continued throughout the remainder of the convention, on the street walking back to the shuttle bus, and on the bus ride back to the hotel -- even the next day on the flight back to Atlanta.

It started when the President walked on to the stage. Even though we admire the man so much, we know very well that he does not have that kind of power. What could it have been -- this powerful force that seemed to bring such inner peace? When we were settled on the bus, I told some of the delegates and alternates near me about this wonderful feeling hoping that they would not categorize me as a "nut case". Their instant response was, "You felt that, too?" Apparently many in Madison Square Garden had the same sensation.

Some of us came to the conclusion that what we felt was the presence of God or his holy spirit assuring us that all was well, and that we were in good hands. Let us pray that this country is in the hands of God who will guide the nation of voters to make the right decision when they go to the polls on November 2. I did not write about this on the diary pages since adequate words failed me at that time. In fact, adequate words still fail me.

May God continue to bless and guide our great Christian President who needs our prayers right now more than ever, and may God continue to bless our great country.
